Street Style Trends at MBFWA

Fashion & Style Trends off the Runway

For the hottest fashion style in the country right now, we look beyond the runways. At Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia last week, there were plenty of interesting ensembles to observe, outside!

As expected, the street style scene embraced many of the year’s major fashion and style trends, often giving them a fresh twist through creative styling. On the other hand, some style standouts opted for more experimental looks.

Here are some of the fashion style trends that caught our eye during MBFWA.

Clashing Print and Colours

The rules are, there are no rules. Fun-loving fashionistas layered graphic print upon graphic print and courageously colour blocked. The key to nailing this trend? Really comitting to the clash.

Tartan

From Highlands to high fashion to street style staple. Tartan print was one of the more surprising trends of the week, with plenty of attendees rocking major tartan statement pieces or even layering the print in different colours.

Romantic

A major fashion style trend during MBFWA was romantic detailing, often but not always in the form of voluminous or exaggerated sleeves. Smaller romantic details such as lace, berets and braids added a whimsical touch to the street style scene.

Suiting

To say we spotted some suits during fashion week is a serious understatement. Whether in the form of a traditional two-piece, a blazer dress, a cropped tux or shorts and blazer combos, suiting was probably the most consistent trend of the week.

Coloured Trench Coats

Stylish show-goers caught our eye in bright vinyl trench coats between shows. While the Sydney weather didn’t exactly warrant any serious outerwear, we’re not about to start pretending that fashion week has anything to do with comfort or practicality. The coloured trench trend was a street style highlight for sure.

Snakeskin

Slithering into just about every show throughout MBFWA was some form of faux-snakeskin. This has been a major fashion style trend all year, so the huge amount of snakeskin on display didn’t come as a surprise.

Bucket Hats

The basically-brimless headwear that landed us indoors during lunchtime at school has made a street style comeback. With no one to scold these fashion week attendees on their inadequate sun protection, they proudly rocked the bucket hat trend.
