Why Margot Robbie Topped the Red Carpet Fashion at The Oscars

Oscars Fashion & Style

For fashion lovers the world over, checking out Oscars fashions on the red carpet that this years Academy Awards is a total treat.

Topping our best-dressed list at the exclusive event this year is none other than talented Aussie actor Margot Robbie.

Let’s first address the obvious. Margot Robbie is painfully good looking and would probably slay even if she rocked up in her jammies and no makeup. Still, her Oscars 2020 style deserves a deep dive. Here’s why.

Vintage Value

How do you make an eco-style statement and look a million bucks at the same time? Wear vintage Chanel, of course.

In a dress pulled from Chanel’s Spring-Summer 1994 haute couture collection by Karl Lagerfeld, Margot Robbie made a strong case for sustainability on the red carpet. Having been the last Chanel ambassador selected by Lagerfeld before his death in February of 2019, Robbie’s decision to wear an archival piece feels all the more significant .

Featuring a circular lapis jewel with a pearl drop detail on the bustier, the strapless navy silk number gives just the right amount of nostalgia.

Understated Elegance

Stylist to the stars Kate Young has been working with Robbie for a while now, and it’s clear that she knows how to play up Robbie’s best features.

The 29-year-old was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Bombshell. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, in which she plays the late Sharon Tate, was nominated for Best Picture. Praise for her talent as both an actress and film producer is pouring in. Basically, Margot Robbie is on her way to becoming a Hollywood heavyweight.

In an industry where many struggle to achieve career longevity and flashiness leads to headlines, nothing says ‘I’m here to stay’ quite like understated glamour. Oh, that and walking the carpet solo. Props!

A deep side part with soft waves looks no-fuss and is something of a signature style for the platinum blonde. Paired with a classic red lip, the overall effect is the perfect amount of Hollywood glam. Somehow, the combination of 90s vintage with old Hollywood elements makes for a perfectly fresh and modern look.

The dark navy colour of the gown compliments her milky skin tone without creating a jarring contrast or veering into witchy territory. Kudos to the entire team behind this look for achieving perfect balance – the key to winning red carpet style.

All in the Style Details

Margot Robbie

What’s incredible about this Chanel dress is that it looks as though it’s just one detail away from looking off. Remove the gorgeous bow-detail armbands and it becomes a ‘safe’ strapless – red carpet code for boring. Add more embellishments to the bust and the balance of the entire look is thrown.

Tiny pearl stud earrings and a pearl ring made for exactly the right amount of bling, letting the dress’s bustier detail do the talking. While subtle, the back of the dress has a trail of around one hundred super small buttons. Nailing evening wear isn’t just about the details themselves, but how every small detail compliments the others.

Can’t wait for future red carpet magic from  Margot Robbie and Kate Young!
