Last year saw a huge rise in divisive, unexpected fashion trends – not all of which will survive the new year.
Trends that gain the most hype in a short time can feel a little more gimmicky than they do end-game. Here are five major fashion trends from last year that are set to take a backseat in 2019.
Itty-Bitty Eyewear
Super-skinny eyewear was a particularly divisive trend from 2018. Classic sunglass styles took a backseat as every model of the moment embraced the itty-bitty eyewear trend. Between the fact that they don’t exactly qualify as protection and aren’t usually flattering on anyone whose surname isn’t Hadid, this major accessories trend looks as though it won’t survive the new year.
Transparent Plastic Everything
While the transparent trend has been favoured by many long before last year, 2018 really saw the plastic fantastic trend rise to prominence. The push for sustainability in fashion is stronger than ever, so we’re not putting any bets on this trend in 2019. Besides, who can be bothered curating the contents of their clear handbag to perfection anymore?
Fluorescent Brights
The street style set got their glow on in 2018 with the resurrection fluorescent fashion. Puffer jackets in acid brights and top-to-bottom fluoro looks turned heads and brightened the street scene last year, but this trend has started to feel more hi-vis than high fashion. After all, looking like a walking highlighter isn’t the only way to make a statement.
Exaggerated, Chunky Dad Sneakers
Chunky sneakers, dad shoes, ugly footwear…there are many ways to think of the thick-soled sneaker trend that absolutely dominated in 2018. While we love any trend that prioritises comfort, this particular footwear favourite is likely to evolve into a model modern silhouette with less emphasis on exaggeration as a key feature. Sorry, dad.
Stilleto Sock Boots
Sock style shoes are set to fade from footwear consciousness in 2019. The new year is about staying chic without compromising on comfort, so the extra-hazardous stiletto sock boot style is something to let go of. Compared to their chunky counterparts, sock boots are a dream to pack in luggage, so we’re a little sad to say goodbye.
If these five are showing signs of fading fast, which trends are set to take over in 2019? Stand by.
