An Evening of Fashion You Won’t Want to Miss

 Emerging Fashion Designers Showcase

You know how our favourite fashion events are the ones where we get to see the latest works by the newest kids on the block! Here’s one we’re so excited about we’re sponsoring! Join us in kicking off the party season with a parade of fabulous and fun fashion, from couture gowns to tutus you can’t imagine! Everything’s been created by the best and brightest students at TAFE SA in their fashion and costume courses. If you’re into the very latest designs by the newest emerging fashion designers, then this is an evening of fashion not to be missed!

An Evening of Fashion, to be held on December 6, will showcase special occasion wear by  students. Think  racewear teamed with millinery and elaborate gowns by the finalists of this year’s Premier’s Design Award for Fashion.

First Nations Fashion Design

For the Premier’s Design Award, students were asked to produce a gown inspired by one of three historical fashion or art movements . They could choose either the Ballets Russes, Japanese costume or pre-Raphaelite Art, along with a favourite designer.

Award winner Kaila Gregory-Alchin drew inspiration from British designer Alexander McQueen and the Ballets Russes to create her dramatic black strapless gown featuring a flared mermaid-style silhouette embellished with feathers.

Another highlight will be the graduate collections of eight students from the Advanced Diploma of Fashion Design and Merchandising. A diverse mix of interests has influenced these collections which range from smartly tailored to dramatically sculptural and Grecian-inspired.

Student Angela Shan says her collection will be spring/summer womenswear with a focus on asymmetry and tailoring.  Fellow student Vanessa Mann is infusing her range with bold colour, abstract prints and textural elements.

TAFE SA Fashion Design and Technology principal lecturer, Helen Jansson, says the Advanced Diploma caters for aspiring designers looking to set up their own business.

“Special occasion wear and tailoring are a real focus in this course. They’re time-consuming and often difficult skills to learn but so important and useful across many areas of fashion,” she says.
