80s Fashion Style Revisited
The bigger, the bolder, the better. That’s what the ‘80s revival is all about. Along with over-sized everything, shoulder pads have re-entered the fashion playing field. Along with other 80s fashion and style favourites, they seem like a natural fit. Ruching, puffy sleeves and fluorescent colours have all made their way back into mainstream fashion. The shoulder pads comeback has been spotted at fashion weeks, on the streets and all over social media. Here’s why this fashion style is hot right now.
The ‘80s have dominated runways at local and international fashion festivals.
Melbourne Fashion Week’s evening wear runway was an old-school disco party. Pop hits accompanied flashy gowns in glittery and reflective materials. Structured shoulder pads amplified this retro moment, as did big, curly hair.
On the other side of the pond, Balenciaga showcased their Spring 2020 collection at Paris Fashion Week. Creative Director Demna Gvasalia said this collection was an ode to “power dressing and fashion uniforms.” Straight, angular shoulder pads were a fixture for many of the women’s looks. Accompanied by cinched waists, rectangular sunglasses and sleek hair, this fashion style meant business.
You wouldn’t be the first to shudder at the thought of over-sized shoulder pads. Many forego the fashion style in fear of looking top heavy. But there are good reasons why they work! Straight shoulders create the illusion of a more defined waist. It’s an easy look to style. Start off with big shoulder pads in your top or mini dress. Bare legs will balance the broader top. Finish the look with a belt wrapped your waist especially when wearing big shoulder pads in a long-lined coat.
On-trend suiting is going hand-in-hand with the trend towards big shoulder pads. Blazer dresses and pants suits are holding strong – hardly surprising when big shoulder pads add to their flattering lines. There’s never been a better time to try out these fashion and style trends. Alternatively, opt for oversized leather jackets with shoulder pads. And don’t forget that statement belt to finish the look.
