Welcome Tee Hits a High Note with Cate Blanchett

Cate Blanchett x Welcome Tee

We love discovering new brands and initiatives supporting great causes. Catching our eye this month, courtesy of award-winning Australian actor Cate Blanchett, is a Welcome T-shirt. The shirt worn by Cate to show her support of refugees is a collaboration tee between West Welcome Wagon and High Tees Australia.

As the conversation around the impact of the fashion industry grows, so too does the understanding that what we support through our shopping habits matters. Could text and design about global issues take over the kitsch slogan tee trend? We aren’t complaining!

Blanchett showed her support for the grassroots not-for-profit West Welcome Wagon cause by repping their WELCOME tee during a recent work trip to London. The design by Melbourne artist Jess McDonald shows human figures joining hands and creating shapes together to spell the word WELCOME.

While McDonald’s High Tees business has always donated $1 of every t-shirt sold to supporting asylum seekers, all profits from the sale of this tee will be donated to West Welcome Wagon.

The funds will go toward supplying local asylum seekers and refugees with aid in the form of goods which are usually not suitable to donate, such as underwear, bedding and more.

Celebrities getting behind important causes play a huge part in broadening the reach of the message and raising awareness.

Blanchett is a Goodwill Ambassador for the UNHR and a staunch advocate for refugee and asylum seeker rights. During an acceptance speech at the 2018 Crystal Awards, she highlighted the importance of changing the narrative surrounding asylum seekers;

“Nowhere is the fractured world more humanly embodied than in the refugee — a person uprooted from all that they hold dear, forced to flee, often resented and reviled in the country where they settle… This is the narrative that we truly need to disrupt.”
