Spotlight on Style

There’s been a full run on spring florals at events around the country in the last week. In the streets however, we’re not seeing it yet.  Nor have we noticed it being sported by the international  street strutters. As you’ll see in our latest trends report below, the biggest single trend that everyone’s adopting, from the streets of Paris to front row favourites on Aussie runways, is complementary colour blocking.  But that’s not all…

Complementary Colour Blocking

Colour blocking has always been a go-to for bolder fashion week attendees. It’s gained wider appeal recently, becoming a runway and red carpet favourite too. There’s one big difference now to how it’s been worn before. Outfits incorporating shades on opposite sides of the colour wheel are the way to go.

If you’re looking to make a statement, complementary colour blocking is catching everyone’s eye, right now. Specifically, clashing neons, pastel opposites and plenty of pink and red combinations  This trend isn’t just for staples like skirts and shirts. Hats, ties, gloves and scarves are often the perfect starting point to making  your statement of style.

Chain Details

They’ve been dominating the street style scene for a while, but right now, chain link hardware is bigger than ever. The beauty in this trend is its inexhaustible potential for styling – earrings, belts and belt add-ons, bag straps, body chains…the list goes on. Once the essential ingredient for a punk-inspired getup, chain details have become a firm favourite with all genders.  No longer confined to subculture styling, it’s being adopted everywhere to add what everyone’s looking for, edge.

Aussie locals are taking on warmer weather with “all white” and “all black” ensembles. While a few Aussie stylists have been quick to strut their spring racing style in complementary colour blocks, the street style set have settled into monochrome blocking. The Aussie’s who’ve turned our heads this week are  jazzing up their monochrome style with sheer and mesh inserts.

Front Row Favourites

Neoprene

You’ve heard us banging on about our front row favourites from the Telstra Perth Fashion Festival for a while now. Yes,  TPFF is done and dusted and the Perthites have moved on to their beachwear runways. However, we still have a few more favourites to bring to your attention. After a brief moment in the spotlight a few years ago, Neoprene is once again on the rise. As you’d have seen in our trend report last week , a whole new neoprene range has been launched by new kid on the block, Grace the Label.

While t might be tricky to imagine this technical fabric outside of the swimwear scene,  ae’lkemi’s runway at TPFF this year proved that neoprene has potential far beyond the wetsuit.

Silver Sparklers

From the futuristic to the fabulous, shades of sparkling silver boots also caught our eye on the runway at Perth’s fashion festival. An absolute front row favourite, boots paired with evening wear stole the show. To see more amazing pairings, check out our coverage of the ae’lkemi runway at TPFF, styled by Ivanna Fontana. Boots are by Jessica Burmann.

Client Liaison Deluxe Line

The musos behind Aussie indie-pop outfit Client Liason have made their first major foray into fashion with their retro-inspired ‘high leisurewear’. Fed up with the restrictions of designing typical band merchandise, the duo has created a line of kitsch casual wear that debuted at MBFW Sydney this year.
