Sustainable ratings Ap, Good On You, founded in Australia in 2015, has rated over six thousand fashion brands and has a following of over 258,000 people. In announcing it’s most sustainable fashion brands of 2024, shout-outs went out to three Australian fashion labels, two of which can only be described as minnows, that have all been recognised for their efforts to get things right.
In a field of more than 1,000 brands that were rated this year, there were 10 that rated highly across key scoring points of people, the planet and animals. All of these brands are small, compared with the largest brands that have the most power to do something and simply choose not to.
The first three announced by Good on You, all scoring GREAT, are: Fremantle-based The Anjelms Project from Western Australia;Ciganka from Doonan in Queensland and Melbourne-based Etiko.
The Ajelms Project
In their own words….
“The ANJELMS Project is a Walyalup/Fremantle-based ethical and sustainable fashion brand that celebrates traditional techniques such as hand-looming, block-printing and hand-stitching, and empowers the makers of our clothes to earn a fair wage from their work. Helping improve the quality of people’s lives is our raison d’etre, but we know that we can’t do this without incorporating sustainable production practices into everything we do – to us, people and planet are inextricably linked.”
“We stand for paying a fair wage for quality work. We stand for helping to keep traditional skills alive. We stand for non-toxic natural dyes and repurposing fabric scraps. We stand for helping to conserve and respect the planet. We stand for reusing, reducing and recycling. We stand for stylish, comfortable and unique clothing for every person. We stand for making small everyday changes to work towards a bigger goal. We stand for 100% transparency, and always striving to do better. We stand for the power cloth has to connect people. We stand for helping to create radical change in the fashion industry.”

Ciganka
In their own words….
“We offer transparency in our creative processes. We are not just another brand. We are artists exploring and reshaping what it means to be an ethical business through emergent processes. We are constantly expanding our awareness, learning and changing our ways in order to encompass a holistic approach to how we vision our business to be.
We use local Australian suppliers, textile remnants, up-cycling 2nd hand fabrics and reclaimed timbers as well as the discarded treasures of human habitation.
We believed in quality and longevity. Our creations can be repurposed, reused and reworked into new pieces. We offer cost effective re-dyes and workshops for you to learn skills around how to maintain your own pieces….
We hand-craft each piece and are considerate of resources, only producing small batches in order to not create excess waste. We are considerate of the plants needs and maintain a high level of mutual respect with our wild-harvesting practices.”

Etiko
In their own words…
“Committed to creating a better world for all, Etiko is the brand that helps you shop your values and wear what you believe in.
In an era of fast-fashion, exploitation and environmental degradation, it has never been more important to stand out from the crowd.
Rise up from the rest and be part of the Etiko fashion revolution that prioritises people and the planet above all else.
Etiko means ethical, and it’s time for all to ‘walk the talk’.”
“Etiko is fiercely committed to being genuinely ethical, ensuring that everybody in our supply chain from the cotton farmers to the garment makers is paid a living wage, as well as full medical, and is guaranteed a safe and clean working environment.“
