Australia’s Biggest Fashion Festival Yet – Melbourne Fashion Week

Melbourne Fashion Week

Melbourne Fashion Week is just around the corner, and the program announced is the biggest we’ve seen.

Taking over the city from 28 August to 5 September, Melbourne Fashion Week is celebrating its 25th year with a huge program and serious designer talent.

It used to be called Melbourne Spring Fashion Week, and along with ditching the link to the race-track the festival’s rebrand brings an edgier look and a wider appeal to a city renowned for its diversity. At last. With a diverse designer line-up and over 150 events, this year’s Melbourne Fashion Week is turning into Australia’s biggest fashion event of the year. (Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Sydney in May was full of mishaps that sent bloggers and buyers alike into a tizzy of suggestions that Australia’s biggest fashion event was no longer. ) With an emphasis on sustainability and diversity, Melbourne Fashion Week could be the forward-thinking festival to take over the Aussie scene.

The Program

There’s more to the schedule than just runway shows. From free events on how to revive your old hat to talks on sustainable design thinking and creating engaging social content, there’s plenty to see and do outside of the main program. You can even get up close and personal with iconic Australian-based Japanese-born designer, Akira Isogawa at his book signing or discover the wearable pieces made by First Nations women in an exclusive exhibition.

Throw in Sudanese-Australian model of the moment Adut Akech Bior as the festival’s celebrity ambassador and the event sounds like a recipe for success. Now based in New York, the 19-year-old runway sensation was back in Australia to help promote the event’s lineup and will be returning for the festival. Walking in previous Melbourne fashion shows played a central role in launching Akech’s career, so she’s certainly a good fit and an exciting choice for the role.
