With all the comeback fashion and style popping up on runways and the perfectly curated social media feeds of street style stars the world over, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the fashion world has no interest in looking to the future any longer.
If theses comeback fashion trends are anything to go by, revivalism is thriving. Here are just a few of the fashion throwbacks we’ve been potting all year long.
Tie Dye
2019 is shaping up to be the year of the modern take on this throwback fashion style. Topping nearly every trend prediction list at the start of the year, tie-dye has well and truly arrived as the laidback style trend for fashion lovers. This nostalgic look is surprisingly versatile, so we’re not surprised it’s sticking around.
Cargo Pants
For a surprising comeback, look no further than the reemergence of the cargo pant. Fashionistas seem to opt for cargos with tapered ankles and multi-pocket design. Paired with a sleek pair of heels, this trend is actually quite chic. You needn’t go camo but, hey, turns out that’s a comeback print trend too.
80s Fashion Style
There was a period in time where the idea of the super-high racer cut bikini coming back into style would have seemed laughable. Yet, over the last couple of years, you’d be hard-pressed to catch a celeb frolicking around in anything but. It shouldn’t have come as a surprise, then, when 80s style more generally started making its way back on the runways and streets.
Power shoulders – the bigger the better – and electric block colours are street style staples during fashion weeks now. This particular fashion style comeback has been embraced enthusiastically in the world of menswear too. How many 80s inspired printed shirts have you spotted on stylish guys lately?
Grandma’s Closet
Maybe it’s a 60s/70s revival or a sign of the growing rejection of fast fashion (hoorah!), but raiding grandma’s closet is one of the wisest style moves you’ll make all year. Crochet anything will do. If grandam was particularly on point in her day, you might even find a super cute prairie style dress too.
Tracksuits
It’s both somewhat bizarre and comforting to see fashion trends that many of us rocked as toddlers making their way back into popularity. Retro-inspired tracksuits, particularly from the 80s and 90s, were an off-duty model staple for a while. Once the general public realised that they too were allowed to look super casual all day long, this trend seriously took off. It’s been going strong in the world of womenswear and menswear alike ever since.
Notable mentions to fanny packs, scrunchies, 90s style eyewear and bike shorts too. Yikes, is there anything left for next season?
