Fashion Forecast 2020
New year, new fashion-scape to navigate. From daring maximalism to pared-back and practical, these 2020 style predictions hold something for all fashion lovers. Here’s what you’ll be seeing a lot more of – our fashion forecast for 2020
Maximalists, rejoice. It’s more acceptable than ever to attend a party in a full blown feather look. With celebs like Lady Gaga, Dua Lipa and Elsa Hosk rocking this trend multiple times, it’s clear that plumage is going to be a popular trend in evening wear this year. Expect to see plenty of feather covered minis, handbags, sandals and playful crop tops.
Bucking the hugely popular micro-bag trend is the oversized tote, because fashion just loves extremes. Fast becoming the go-to bag for street style stars, the mega tote borders on ridiculousness… until you remember it’s actually super convenient to be able to carry your office around with you.
If you’ve only just figured out how to fit your essentials into your micro bag, don’t fret. Minis are set to continue as a 2020 style trend too.
The Elevated Bralette
Ever creeping upwards, the crop top has paved the way for the bralette-as-top trend to make a splash in 2020. Think leather-look, sequinned and even crochet. Sexy sophistication is the aim of the game when styling an elevated bralette or micro crop. This trend is likely to be a red carpet hit too, so don’t skip the award show best-dressed lists if you’re looking for styling inspo.
Sky High Platforms
If one 70s inspired trend sticks around this year, it’s bound to be the platform shoe. A refreshing departure from the divisive kitten heel craze of 2019, heel heights are climbing their way back up. Expect platforms in luxe finishes and bold colours. Abstract heel shapes have been a huge hit in the shoe world lately, so we’re looking forward to seeing more platform-based iterations of the trend.
When suiting made a major return to womenswear a couple of years ago, many thought it would be a passing trend. It may be time to accept that suiting up is here to stay. 2020 will see the continuation of the timeless blazer and trouser combo, but suiting pieces worn as separates is going to be bigger than ever. Since separates can be incorporated into your wardrobe all year long, this is one of the most sustainable-savvy trends to embrace. Blazer as a dress, suit trousers with a glam bralette, bike shorts under a blazer…you get the idea.
Airy, theatrical and voluminous blouses and dresses are all the romance we need this year. Ultra puffy off-the-shoulder pieces have been a fashion-week favourite for what feels like forever, but we’re going to see more practical takes on this 2020 style trend.
Chanel’s hotpant-heavy runway offering late last year made a strong case for the return of this micro-short trend. With 60s influences swinging into the trendscape more and more, the hotpants reemergence doesn’t come as too much of a surprise. What is more surprising, perhaps, is the refreshingly demure spin this retro look is getting. Rock this trend with hosiery and matching heels for elongated elegance or pair them with your favourite knee-high boots.
The 80s Influence
What started as something of a novelty throwback trend is set to soar in 2020. Power shoulders, wild prints and mismatched everything. Big sleeves, big hair and an even bigger attitude.
