Fashion Design Competition For Young Aussies

5 Categories of Fashion Design

If you’re a young creative with a love for fashion design or wearable art, you’re in luck. The Apex Australia Teenage Fashion & Arts (AATFA) Youth Festival is on again. AAFTA has been running for over 26 years. It  provides students with the opportunity to showcase their fashion design skills. The festival is open to all schools in Australia.

Each state and territory holds a local event to determine who will participate in the National Finals. For each State, there are 1st and 2nd prizes for finalists across 5 categories.

The National Finals event will take place in Melbourne on October 19th at LCI Melbourne, formerly the Australian Academy of Design. The national final will also allow students and staff members to connect with a global network of over 12,000 creatives.

No experience is necessary to enter your designs and creations. But be quick.  Entry deadlines are fast approaching and differ for each state.

The fashion design award categories are as follows:

Casual Wear

This category covers all general day wear including sportswear, beachwear and leisurewear. This category is technically judged.

Formal Wear

The Formal Wear category covers all types of clothing worn to Balls or Gala events and includes garments suitable for after 5, graduation ceremonies or evening wear. This category is technically judged.

Wearable Art

This section allows the entrant’s full creative talents to be paraded. Construction and material is left to the imagination of the entrant. This category is not technically judged.

Society & Environment

The Society & Environment category allows entrants to portray a garment depicting a civilization, a background or surrounding. The garment could be an opportunity for the student to make a statement on an issue that they are passionate about.  The category will be judged on the same criteria as the wearable art section.

Costume & Theatrical

This is a new category being trialled. The  number of entries received across all states, will help determine whether it will be successfully introduced.
