International Slow Fashion Label Showcases at
Jakarta Fashion Week
Despite being one of Indonesia’s most prolific and sought-after designers, luxury, slow fashion resort wear label BIASA presented its first runway show at Jakarta Fashion Week 2025, after 3 decades in the business.
Founded in 1994 by Italian-born designer Susanna Perini in Bali, BIASA fuses local artisanship with Italian minimalism and a modern edge. It’s a luxury resort-wear brand with a design ethos boasting contemporary, timeless and sophisticated free-flowing styles for men, women, and children.
Known for its sophisticated designs that captivate fashion lovers around the world, BIASA is grounded in slow fashion with hand-made details and natural dyes and fabrics. Though seemingly simple, each of the brand’s pieces reveals layers of craftsmanship, from hand-loomed fabrics to intricate embroidery.
BIASA is now recognised worldwide and has boutiques and galleries in Bali and Jakarta. Through BIASA Art, Perini supports local artists and artisans, celebrating Indonesia’s cultural richness. Her dedication to Indonesian arts earned her a Knighthood in 2017 from Italy, recognising her contributions to the arts and culture.
The highly anticipated Jakarta Fashion Week showcase, ‘Rhapsody’ captured Perini’s creative vision with a mix of contrasting moods, colours, and themes. Three stories were revealed: Harmony, Nature, and ‘Sangha’ (meaning community). Each was woven together to reflect BIASA’s values of simplicity, elegance, and artistry.
“Rhapsody beautifully captures Jakarta’s vibrant spirit and BIASA’s close connection to the community.”
In the Harmony collection, the sacred black-and-white motif ‘Saput Poleng’ represents balance and harmony. Each piece shines with handmade artistry, from embroidery and appliqué to hand-sewn finishes. Signature styles include voluminous skirts, layered underskirts, and hand-stitched bustiers, adding a romantic yet edgy touch.
The Nature story reveals rich indigo hues, drawing from nature’s purity. Made with natural dyes, oversized indigo kaftans, dresses and accessories, it celebrates BIASA’s eco-conscious approach. Flowing silhouettes in linen, cotton, and silk offer casual elegance with a touch of sophistication.
‘Sangha’ pays homage to community values with earthy tones of Indian red, marigold, and tangerine. Flowing dresses, oversized shirts, and thoughtful accessories reflect themes of love and acceptance. Wooden bangles and suede ballerinas add an artisanal, grounded charm.
The event was a highlight of Jakarta Fashion Week. It included major star power energy from the front row, including a number of international clients who travelled to Jakarta especially for BIASA’s runway.
VIP’s attending included the Speaker of the People’s Representative Council of Indonesia, Puan Maharani; one of the country’s leading property entrepreneurs Rina Ciputra Sastrawinata; iconic Indonesian designers Itang Yunasz, Ghea Panggabean and Poppy Dharsono; President Director of Piaggio, Marco Noto La Diega accompanied by his wife; actress and philanthropist Raline Shah; Hana Makarim; the Italian Ambassador to Indonesia Benedetto Latteri and Mrs Latteri; and the Brazilian Ambassador to ASEAN Henrique Ferraro. Also seated front row were BIASA lovers Santi Tio and Gwen The. Leading business advisor Ms The flew in for the event, as did Mariella Harvey-Hanrahan, who was previously the Founder and Director of the Perth Fashion Festival. Luxury brand ambassador and leading actor from Lebanon, Roger Salmeh had also flown in for the event.
Many of those who had flown in were wearing BIASA and beaming with pride to be supporting Perini.
Everyone attending Jakarta Fashion Week had a favourite show and for these A listers BIASA’s show was it. The clothes, the staging, the models, the music and the beautiful confluence of all of these elements made this show the spectacle that it was. It certainly captured the hearts of Jakarta’s creative community.
BIASA’s Rhapsody collection is launching online and in Jakarta and Bali boutiques in early 2025. Don’t miss it!
